Extend Your Study Permit

  • Apply for a study permit extension at least 30 days before your study permit expires, if you want to keep studying in Canada.
  • Apply for a new study permit if your study permit expires and you want to continue to stay in Canada and study.

Restore Status As A Student

  • Apply to restore your status as a student within 90 days of losing it or having your status expire.
  • You may only apply to restore your status if you have continued to meet the requirements under which you were allowed to enter.
  • You must also have met all the conditions imposed on your permit.
  • You also need to stay in Canada until a decision is made on your application but you are not allowed to study until your status has been restored.
  • There is no guarantee that your application to restore your status will be accepted. It is done on a case-by-case basis.
  • This is why it is important to have the proper representation from day 1 to ensure the application process is as smooth as possible.

PGWP

The Post-Graduation Work Permit Program eligibility criteria has changed to:

  • Starting September 1, 2024, international students who begin a study program that is part of a curriculum licensing arrangement will no longer be eligible for a postgraduation work permit upon graduation. Under curriculum licensing agreements, students physically attend a private college that has been licensed to deliver the curriculum of an associated public college.
  • Graduates of master’s degree programs will soon be eligible to apply for a 3-year work permit. Under current criteria, the length of a postgraduation work permit is based solely on the length of an individual’s study program, hindering master’s graduates by limiting the amount of time they have to gain work experience and potentially transition to permanent residence.

Options For Student’s Family

Open work permits will only be available to spouses of international students in master’s and doctoral programs.
The spouses of international students in other levels of study, including undergraduate and college programs, will no longer be eligible.

Post-Graduation Work Permit

  • Open work permits will only be available to spouses of international students in master’s and doctoral programs.
  • The spouses of international students in other levels of study, including undergraduate and college programs, will no longer be eligible.

Quick Facts

  • On January 1, 2024, the cost-of-living requirement for study permit applicants has been updated
  • Since December 1, 2023, post-secondary designated learning institutions have been required to confirm every letter of acceptance submitted by an applicant outside Canada directly with IRCC.
  • In 2024, targeted pilots are to be implemented aimed at helping underrepresented cohorts of international students pursue their studies in Canada.
  • In time for the fall 2024 semester, IRCC will adopt a “recognized institution” framework to benefit post-secondary DLIs. These DLIs will benefit, for example, from the priority processing of study permits for applicants who plan to attend their school.
